Improving outcomes for children, young people, their families and the wider community…step by step

About us

StEPs was set up in 2015 to widen the support offered to vulnerable age ranges in the St Albans District and beyond. Our remit quickly widened and we now support individuals and organisations across Hertfordshire. Our aims are to work with families who are vulnerable and in need of advice, help and support through more chaotic and troubling times. This can be for a variety of reasons, from anti social behaviour, drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence or behavioural issues.

We also work with children with SEND (special educational needs or disabilities).

We run Parenting courses and workshops which we target parents and carers to attend - some of these are 2 hour workshops and some are courses ranging from 4 to 8 weeks in length on a variety of different subjects - 'Understanding Boys' 'Understanding Teens' 'Positive Parenting and discipline' 'The family tookit' and many more.

Other services provided include parenting support, integrated practice for children and young people ensuring early intervention, adult and family learning platforms. We also offer enrichment programmes for children and young people to develop key skills linked to attainment, achievement and personal development and we can support local community groups to meet their specific needs and requirements.

We have skilled and experienced staff and volunteers who are able to deliver:

Book Banks

Book Banks © is a reading initiative run by StEPs in partnership with local food banks. Volunteers create a quiet, inviting space in the main food bank area and can read stories to children (mostly under 5's, but older children in the school holidays are also welcomed) using story sacks and exciting, engaging resources. Children are able to pick a book from our huge bank of second hand and donated books which they can take home with them. These books are given freely and they can return them the next week if they choose to do so or just take a new one, although we encourage them to bring them back and share the story with us.

Funders include:

St Albans District Council, Hertsmere Borough Council, The Big Lottery and The Ernest Cook Trust.

Parenting

    Positive parenting isn't easy…Fact!

Every different stage has different challenges, but you are not alone. There are people going through similar circumstances to you and many agencies and professionals are here to help, its just a question of finding the right ones!

We are able to work with families (there are costs involved, but this can often be covered if you have an eCAF in place or in some cases schools cover the costs themselves). We can tailor make a plan to best support your needs, whether you need support with behaviour, routines, access or financial issues. StEPs highly experienced and dedicated staff can support you through all of life’s challenges. From housing to behavioural issues, we can assist with supporting you, your family and your child's school with anything that is causing you anxiety. We have many years experience working with families and have a vast range of networks and contacts in the local area. If we don't know the answer, we will find someone that does!

StEPs has a range of good quality resources in the online shop which are great value for money, for you to use with your child/young person or for use with groups of children when teaching intervention programmes such as Wellbeing, Protective Behaviours and/or Self Esteem.
